Description
Spring vetch – natural feed and green fertilizer in one
Spring fodder vetch is a plant that farmers value for its simplicity of cultivation and high nutritional value. Thanks to its thin, creeping stems and small, lush green leaves, it works great as feed for farm animals - especially in mixtures with oats. Vetch greens are an excellent source of protein that supports the healthy development and good condition of animals.
Spring vetch for fodder purposes
This variety of vetch is intended exclusively for feed use. It is perfect as green fodder for cattle, sheep, horses and other farm animals. It is light, easy to digest and rich in protein, which has a positive effect on the condition and development of animals.
Why?
Spring vetch grows well in sunny locations, in fertile soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. As a legume, it itself fixes nitrogen from the air – so it does not need nitrogen fertilization. However, it is worth supporting it with a phosphorus-potassium mixture to achieve an even better yield.
The plant grows to 40–80 cm and forms long, flexible stems with characteristic leaves ending in tendrils. It is also often used in cereal mixtures – for example with oats – which gives farmers greater flexibility in planning feed.
When and how to sow?
-
If you plan to use vetch as green manure, sow it in summer (July) and plow it in autumn – before it blooms.
-
Want to fertilize your soil in spring? Sow vetch in autumn (September–October). The plant will have time to establish roots before winter, and will be ready to be ploughed in early spring.
Sowing rate: 80–120 kg per hectare
